SnapShot

The SnapShot tool  saves the selected window or display component into a file. The user may select a window or component by clicking in the text pads. The filename is generated from the selected component and selected file extension, but the user may specify another name in the Save to File text field.

Controls

View brings up another window showing the currently selected component.

Update updates the current list of windows in the Windows pad. When a window in the Windows pad is clicked, its components (if any) are displayed in the Components window.

Format allows the user to select the format of the image file to be written. Image files may be created in the formats written by the Java Advanced Imaging Toolkit (.bmp, .jpg, .png, .pnm, .tif) as well as Postscript. The JPEG Quality textfield only appears if jpg is selected as the format. 0 is the lowest quality, 100 the highest.

Save writes the image file named in the Save to File text field.

Tricks and Gotchas

On some platforms, if an OpenGL application is covered by another window, the resulting image created by SnapShot will only show the uncovered portions of the OpenGL window.

On the Solaris platform, capturing an OpenGL window sometimes results in a very faint image. An unreliable workaround is to change window managers, but this problem has been seen under the CDE, AfterStep, and Enlightenment window managers.

Sometimes an extra wide border appears around the image.
